Pre + Post care instructions

Cleanse

• For the first 7 days, wash the treated area 1-2 times a day with gentle cleanser

Moisturize

• After cleansing, apply a thin layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor to the treated area

Protect

• Cover the area with a bandage. Use the ointment until there is no more crust forming. Exposing the wound to air to dry out is NOT recommended. Please make sure the soft pad of the band-aid is touching the area that was treated, that way you are not pulling the scab off with the sticky part of the band-aid

• if you experience pain you may take Tylenol, but avoid Aspirin or Motrin, which increases bleeding

If you start bleeding

• If bleeding starts, put continuous pressure on the area for 20 mins. If bleeding continues after that please email us at info@vafamd.com and we will reply ASAP

Signs of infection

• A small area of redness (1/4in.) around the lesion/ where the area was treated is normal. If you experience more redness, pain, swelling, puss, drainage, streaks leading away from the removal site, please contact us immediately at info@vafamd.com. The area must be kept clean and may require up to 4-5 applications of antibiotics until you see the doctor.

• Remember that any and all lesions can return. If a particular abnormality was removes and comes back looking different, please return for a follow-up appointment.

Pre Care

2 weeks before treatment:

1. No sun exposure where you’re actively tanning or burn.

2. No self tanner/spray tan use.

3. Discontinue any antibiotics/photosensitizing medication use. Always consult with your Primary Care Provider prior to discontinuing any medication use. 

3-5 days before treatment:

4. Discontinue any retinol/tretinoin/hydroquinone use to the treatment area(s).

5. Discontinue any AHA/BHA’s to the treatment area(s) (Salicylic, glycolic, lactic acids, etc). 

6. Avoid hair coloring/bleaching appointments as the chemicals can temporarily sensitize the skin

7. It is recommended to pre dose with Valtrex or similar if you experience Herpes simplex virus to prevent a cold sore outbreak.

Day of Treatment Recommendations:

8. Please arrive in comfortable clothes that you don’t mind potentially getting messy.

9. Avoid applying any makeup to the face/neck if they’re being treated.

Post Care

1. Avoid excessive heat/friction to the treated areas for a minimum of 48 hours. Ie; No working out, hot showers, pools, saunas, etc. **You can shower however please be mindful of the temperature of the water. 

2. No sun exposure on the treated areas for at least 2 weeks.

3. Avoid retinol/tretinoin/hydroquinone use as well as AHA/BHA’s (Salicylic, glycolic, lactic acids, etc) to the treated areas for a minimum of 7-10 days. 

4. Avoid any hair coloring/bleaching for a minimum of 2 weeks after your service if the face/neck was treated.

5. Avoid applying makeup to the treated area(s) for a minimum of 3-5 days.

• History of keloid scarring: This can be a risk for scar formation.

Medications to avoid

2. Other supplements: Discontinue vitamin E, fish oil, and herbal supplements like ginkgo biloba.

3. Topical products: Stop using retinoids (Retin-A, tretinoin), glycolic acid, and salicylic acid at least one week before the procedure.

4. Photosensitizing medications: Tell your provider if you are taking any medications that increase sun sensitivity, such as certain antibiotics like doxycycline or minocycline.

5. Isotretinoin (Accutane): You should wait at least 12-18 months after finishing this medication before getting a laser treatment.
   

Social downtime & when you can expect to see results

1. We highly recommend ensuring you have at least 2-3 days set aside for your recovery.

2. The treated areas will look red/“sun burnt” - this is a normal anticipated reaction to treatment. Depending on the strength of your treatment this usually resolves within 1-7 days post treatment. 

3. You may experience some minor swelling, particularly around the eyes. Depending on the strength of your treatment this can last a few hours-a few days.  

4. You will likely go through a “sand paper-y” period of healing where your skin will feel rough to the touch & some minor shedding/flaking may occur. This typically resolves in about 1 week for the face & up to 2 weeks for the neck/body. 

5. Results are progressive & typically require more than 1 session. You can expect to see improvement within the first 2-3 weeks & gradually improving for up to 4-6 weeks after each treatment.

5. Avoid any hair coloring/bleaching for a minimum of 2 weeks after your service if the face/neck was treated.

6. Avoid applying makeup to the treated area(s) for a minimum of 7-10 days/until the skin has stopped flaking.

3. History of keloid scarring

4. Recent use of oral isotretinoin

5. Prior radiation therapy unless approved by your physician

2. Immediately post treatment you will likely experience some redness, as well as a sunburn sensation. Heat sensation typically resolves in 24 hours or less, while redness can persist for 24-72 hours. In some cases, some swelling can present & usually resolves in 24-48 hours. Any brown spots will gradually darken & flake off over 5-7 days when treating the face & 14-18 days for the body.

3. It generally takes 3-4 weeks to see the final result from an individual session. Results vary, typically requiring a minimum of 3 treatments spread apart 4-6wks from one another.

Pre Care

Day of Treatment Recommendations:

1. Make sure you've eaten a good meal a few hours before treatment.

2. Make sure you’re well hydrated - don’t forget to drink water.

3. Discontinue using any actives at least 24-48 hours beforehand to reduce discomfort levels.

4. Take about 800-1000mg of Acetaminophen (Tylenol) about 30 minutes before your appointment if possible. This greatly reduces discomfort level.

5. Discontinue any topical actives if you’re currently using any 2-3 days beforehand to reduce sensitivity (Retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, etc)

*Laughing gas is available upon request, at no additional cost to you, to assist with any discomfort during treatment. Let your provider know if you’d like to use it!

5. Avoid applying any makeup to the face/neck if possible.

Post Care

1. Implanted electrical devices: Pacemakers, internal defibrillators, or any other electrical device. 

2. Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Sofwave is contraindicated for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. 

3. Open wounds or lesions: Any open wounds, including severe acne or dermatitis, in the treatment area. 

4. Active infections: Recent infections such as cold sores (HSV-1) or other active skin infections.

5. Metal implants: Metal plates, screws, or other permanent implants in the treated area.
